Turning off the lights to hear the requests and protect the person’s dignity!

Islam is a religion that gives great importance to the honor and dignity of human beings and invites everyone to meet people’s needs. To clarify the matter, we mention one of the beautiful manners of the Ahl al-Bayt (a):

Harith Hamdani, one of the companions and friends of Imam Ali b. Abi Talib (a), narrated:

One night, I entered the house of Imam Ali (a) and while talking to him, I said:

“O Amir al-Muminin! I have a request from you!”

Imam (a) said: “O Harith! Do you think I am worthy to hear your request? (it shows that Imam (a) having all the virtues and high rank, did not consider himself superior to others.)

I said: “Of course, O Amir al-Muminin! You are superior and more worthy than everyone!”

Imam (a) said: “May God reward you through me!” Then he got up and turned off the light and said: “I turned off the light, because I did not want to see the humiliation of making request in your face, and you can express your needs easily and without any fear.

Then, Imam (a) added: “Once I heard from the Prophet (s), who said:

Human being’s needs and requests are trusts of God, which must be hidden with the person and he should not tell them to anyone except the Almighty God.

Then he said:

Whoever hears his brother’s need and request should help him and fulfill his request; of course, he should not let him to be disappointed as much as he can.” (1)(2)

This was one of the beautiful manners of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) according to true Islam, which the One God has commanded human beings and invites them to protect each other’s honor and dignity.
