Nice way of conduct of the Prophet (s) toward the Jewish neighbor
The Prophet of Islam (s) had a Jewish neighbor who much annoyed the Prophet (s). Every day from top of his house roof, he poured ashes and fire on the Prophet’s head.
He was apparently throwing garbage and ashes out in the street, but in fact he did so to show his anger and hatred toward the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him and his family), while the Prophet (s) graciously overlooked it. One day, the man did not appear, and the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) asked about the man’s absence.
They said: “Fortunately, the man has got ill and his insults have been cut off due to his illness.” The Prophet (s) said: “We should go to visit him!” He moved to the Jewish man’s house and knocked on his house door. The man’s wife came to the door and asked, “who is it?” The Prophet said: “The Prophet of Muslims has come to visit his ill neighbor!”
The woman told the story to her husband. The Jewish man who was very surprised and faced with an unpredictable action, asked his wife to open the door to him to come in. The Prophet (s) came in, sat beside the patient’s bed, and asked the patient about his condition. He behaved in a way as if no harassment he had received from the Jewish man.
The Jewish man, who was covering his face out of shame, and was astonished seeing the great morals of the Prophet of Islam, asked: “Is this your personal morals? Or is it part of your religious orders?” The Prophet (s) said: “It is part of our religious teachings that we recommend all Muslims to act this way.” Thus, the Jewish man embraced Islam seeing that appealing and nice way of conduct of the Prophet of Islam (s).
So, to describe such a great man, it should be said:
وَ إِنَّكَ لَعَلى خُلُقٍ عَظيم
And indeed you possess a great character [68: 4]
