Terrorism does not exist in Islam!

Today, Islam is regarded by some people of the world as the religion of terror, because of the propaganda of some rulers of powerful countries which are enemy to Islam and have advertised such a bad face of Islam. But today, we want to discuss hadiths[*] which have rejected terrorism and show that Islam is not a religion of terror, and rather it is a religion of peace.

Abi al-Sabah Kinani said, “I told Imam al-Sadiq (a) that, ‘we have a neighbor in Hamadan; when we mention the virtues of Imam Ali (a), he insults him. If you allow me, I will ambush and attack him by sword and kill him.’”

Imam (a) said, “O Aba Sabah! This is assassination and the Prophet (a) of God has prohibited assassination. O Aba Sabah, Islam has not permitted assassination. Leave him to God!”

Another hadith with a similar message is transmitted from the Prophet (a) by Muslim b. ‘Aqil [1] who was Imam al-Husayn’s (a) envoy to Kufa. When Sharik b. ‘Abd Allah A‘ur became sick in the house of Hani [2], ‘Ubaydallah[3] decided to go and visit him. Sharik told Muslim, “tomorrow, this evildoer will come to visit me. I will engage in conversation with him; when, I call and ask for water, you come out and kill him.” The next day, when ‘Ubaydallah entered the house of Hani, Muslim had hidden, but he changed his mind. When later Sharik objected to him and asked about why he gave up, Muslim mentioned two reasons: the first reason was Hani’s objection about killing ‘Ubaydallah in his house; and the second reason was remembering a hadith from the noble Prophet (a) who said, ‘surly, faith prohibits assassination and a believer never assassinates.’” This hadith has been transmitted by both Shiites and Sunnites. These hadiths suggest that assassination is prohibited always and in any case.

Unfortunately, in today’s world, some countries which assassinate leaders and great people of nations, accuse Islam with assassination and by organizing groups in the name of Islam, such as ISIS, call Islam a religion of assassination and violence, while Islam rejects them.

[1] – Muslim b. ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib (Arabic: مسلم بن عقیل بن ابي طالب), cousin of Imam al-Husayn (a) and his representative in the Kufa before Battle of Karbala and was from Al Abi Talib. Muslim was present in some conquest of Muslims as well as the Battle of Siffin. He went to Kufa as a representative of Imam al-Husayn (a) in order to provide the Imam with a status report of the city and to make sure that people of Kufa are persistent on and truthful in their invitation of the Imam. In a report to the Imam, he wrote that Kufans were prepared for the Imam’s arrival.

However, after that ‘Ubayd Allah b. Ziyad was appointed as the governor of Kufa and because people were afraid of him, they suddenly left Muslim alone. Thus, he was arrested and martyred on the day of ‘Arafa (Dhu l-Hijja 9), 60 (September 10, 680). The story of Muslim being left alone and his martyrdom in Kufa is the theme of a well-known lament recited by the Shi’as. The lament is recited on the day of ‘Arafa and sometimes on Muharram 1.

[2] – Hānī b. ʿUrwa al-Murādī (Arabic: هاني بن عروة المرادي) is one of the greatest and closest companions of Imam ‘Ali (a). He participated in the battles of Jamal and Siffin and was known as one of the important people in Hujr b. ‘Adi’s uprising against Ziyad b. Abih. He opposed Mu’awiya when he was asking allegiance of the people of Kufa for Yazid’s caliphate. His house was the center of political and military activities since ‘Ubayd Allah b. Ziyad entered Kufa. He played a very significant role in Muslim b. ‘Aqil’s uprising. On Dhu l-Hijja 8, 60/680, after the martyrdom of Muslim b. ‘Aqil and by the order of ‘Ubayd Allah b. Ziyad he was beheaded.

Imam al-Husayn (a) was informed of his martyrdom, when he was in the middle of the way towards Kufa. Imam al-Husayn (a) cried on his demise, recited the al-Istirja’ verse and asked for Allah’s mercy upon him several times.

[3] – ʿUbayd Allāh b. Zīyād b. Abīh (Arabic: عبيد الله بن زياد, b. 33/653-54, d. 67/686-87) was the famous Umayyad commander, the governor of Kufa at the time of the Tragedy of ‘Ashura and one of the key persons in the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn (a) and his companions. ‘Ubayd Allah was the governor of Basra, but after the chaotic situation in Kufa in 60/679, Yazid appointed him to the governorship of Kufa keeping the governorship of Basra as well and assigned him with the task of suppressing the uprising of Imam al-Husayn (a). Due to his role in the tragedy of Karbala, ‘Ubayd Allah is among the most hated figures before Shi’a.
