Imam Ali’s (a) Life Conduct toward the Poor during his Rule

Two women went to Imam (a) and expressed their need and asked for help. Imam (a) said, “It is upon us to help you in case your word is true.”

Then, Imam (a) sent a man to the market to buy some foods and clothes for them and gave each of the women 100 dirhams as well. One of them objected, “I am Arab; while this woman is not! Why do you treat us the same? An Arab’s share must be more!”

Imam Ali (a) said, “I have recited the Qur’an well and have reflected upon it. I have seen nowhere in the Qur’an where it differentiates between an Arab and a non-Arab as little as a fly’s wing (the glorious Qur’an rejects racism).
