Imam Jawad’s Awareness of Ibn Sahl’s Heart and Responding to his Request

Muhammad ibn Sahl ibn al-Yasa’ said: I was in Mecca and decided to go to Medina for a trip. I entered Imām al-Jawād and wanted to ask him to give me a shirt to cover me. There was no opportunity for me to make such a request and I said goodbye to him and intended to come out, so I said to myself: I will write a letter and ask him.

He said: So I wrote the letter and went to Prophet’s mosque to perform two rak’ats of prayer and ask God for blessings a hundred times. Therefore, if it occurred to me to present the letter, I will present it, or else I would tear it up. I did so. It occurred to me not to present the letter to the Imam. I tore the letter and left the city of Medina. At that time I saw a messenger with clothes in a striped handkerchief. He was looking for Muhammad ibn Sahl al-Qummi until he reached me and said: Your master has sent these to you. They were two shirts.

Ahmad bin Muhammad said: God decreed that I washed Muhammad ibn Sahl when he died and I shrouded him in those two shirts.
